Final reflection

This project was the biggest challenge of all. This was because I had to make my own dress which I've never done before. Looking back at my previous two projects, I think this project turned out the best and in this post I will explain why.

Starting with my research this has helped me enormously to further develop my project. By researching trends from the 90s and now, I had a good foundation. I noticed that trends such as wide leg jeans and oval sunglasses are a recurring trend of the 90s that can be seen a lot now. This research has enabled me to incorporate trends in my own project. My dress is inspired by Chanel's little black dress, that's why the research in Chanel was very important. By finding out why this dress was invented allowed me to incorporate these thoughts into my own project. Chanel wanted to free women from tight clothes and corsets, so I wanted to create loose designs. The research in other fashion designers has also helped to gain even more inspiration. The first ideas were conceived and by doing more research these were further developed. At first I had quite a simple design, but through the research of Marc Jacobs I found out that my design was too simple. The final design is much more playful, creative but also timeless.

Being new to fashion design it was important to watch tutorials on how to sew and how to use a sewing machine. Because of this I learned the basics and with a little help from my mother I managed to make a dress. Unfortunately the dress became less sustainable than expected because the second-hand shops here do not have many fabrics in stock than, for example, in England. However, I am more aware of which substances are more harmful than the environment and because of this I consciously chose silk. I couldn't afford this so it ended up being polyester but it's the idea that counts.

Furthermore, the research of stylists and editorials helped me how I wanted to present my work. By looking at editorials from the 90s and now, I was able to see how I could create this style with a modern twist. By seeing different layouts I could see well what kind of atmosphere it had and how I could make my theme stand out more strongly. I also saw how I could best present my photos to make it attractive for my target audience. I saw how accessories were presented and through the research of photographers I could see how the lighting and which angles are important to create a certain image. Moreover, by taking test photos of the location, I got a good idea of what the environment looked like and how I wanted to take the photos. I also found out that I still had to do research on examples of different poses. This allowed me to make the photos even more powerful. As last by creating a questionnaire about what my target audience thought about trends of the 90s and now and how they wanted to see this gave me confirmation that I was going in the right direction.

I am very happy with my pictures as 2D outcomes. They have the right lighting, facial expression, background and poses. Because I guided my friend in taking pictures, they turned out well. I find the photos very powerful and expressive. My biggest achievement is that the photos, accessories and the dress have a luxurious look while everything is very cheap. This is because I presented it well and this is what I was aiming for.

I am proud because, for the first time I made a dress that you can actually wear. This dress is even multifunctional because, you can get 2 designs from 1 shape.  This helped me a lot afterwards when I suddenly had a setback and I didn't had a model anymore for the shoot. Luckily, I was able to solve this to be a model myself, but in the future I will pay attention to good communication so, that misunderstandings can occur.  My dress also fits very well with the theme. It turned out more beautiful than expected. Everything is well stitched and the sizes and proportions are right. I took into account the body shape of the model and accentuated the better sides of the body. I was also able to adapt the dress to my figure in a smart way because I suddenly have to be a model. This enabled me to respond well to the situation.

I have learned that by practicing and trying things out you will achieve the best result and minimize the chance of mistakes. The previous 2 projects were finished just in time before the deadline. Due to good preparation and planning, I managed to prevent this for my last project. I have further developed my drawing skills in fashion illustrations. Learned new skills such as sewing and draping. I also further developed my photography and visualization skills. I now more how to approach a new project and I know even better how to link my research to my own project and where to search in order to develop ideas.

If I could do this project over again, I would do the photo shoot a little more extensively. It was very early in the morning and I still had to work so, in the end we did one location too fast. Therefore I'm not completely satisfied with the close up of the bag. This was also due time because, I had to fly to England a few days later and I wouldn't be able do the shoot. In the future I will plan the photo shoot a little earlier so, that this could have been prevented. I would also further develop my research. I've grown a lot in this already but, I could go into it a little deeper with more substantiation and do more secondary research.

In general I am very happy with the end result. I see a clear development in the quality of the photos. The poses, background, lighting and sharpness are at their best in my latest project. I took such powerful pictures that an introduction was no longer necessary. The layout of my editorials is different from what I would normally choose because I used different colors and theme. This reinforces my theme even more and there is a coherence and a good overflow. I think it's a strong editorial and the accessories enhance my dress. The story is well written through images.

In the past year at DMUIC I got to know myself and I was able to see how well I can deal with the amount of work and time pressure. Because I hadn't done any previous education within fashion I didn't know what to expect.
Therefore, this foundation year was really useful because now I am better prepared for upcoming year. I got a better idea of how DMU teaches students. I also have a better idea of what is expected of me, which skills are important and which modules I can expect. By getting projects in my progression route I could see if I was good at this and how to do it. I found it very exciting, challenging but a lot of fun.
I have wanted to become a fashion editor for a long time and that is why I chose this course. Through this year gave me the confirmation that I chose the right course. I noticed that I am less strong in making things but have a strong creative mind and I think this is a good quality for the course. I hope to further develop my skills next year and dare to step out of my comfort zone even more with projects. I hope to grow even more and learn new things.

I am very excited for about what is coming when I start my bachelor and I am looking forward to what the future will bring.
