Creating my editorial
The photos are finished and it is now time to present these in a flipbook. In my post about editorial research I received feedback from my teacher Sam. He told me to try at least 2-3 layouts versions before I choose my final one. Before I got to my final layout, I tested colours, shapes, sizes and heights to see what I like best. See examples below.
The final layout outcome:
After my research in editorials I wanted to do 1 page with the final image and 1 page with the remaining images. With these images I want to tell a story, how you create a look by using the right accessories. All separate items but when everything comes together it fits as one. So, my first idea was to add a short introduction next to the photos where I presented the images. I added all the images in my flipbook and put them in the right order as shown above. When I saw this, I saw that I didn't need words to tell my story because the pictures already did this. I think the pictures are very powerful, consistent, and straightforward that don't need words because the pictures says it all. However, when I put the 4 images in one page it became really messy and the pictures were too good to be shown in a really small format.
So I decided to change the order and use 1 image that was additional for the introduction, 2 pages with 2 accessories images and the final image on the last page. In my previous post on editorials research I saw that dark brown, dark plum and dark green were also colors of the 90s. I thought these colors would look very nice with the photos but when I tried this I thought it was very ugly and made my page look boring. Picture shown above. It fit some photos, but not all. I also knew from my research in the trends of the 90s that neon colors were also a trend. I didn't include this in my 2d and 3d work, but I thought maybe I could use this as a layout. I used a color that I wouldn't be so quick to pick but I wanted to try something new. When I started working with neon yellow, it immediately appealed to me because using this color makes the pages stand out.
In my last 2 projects I used an image as front cover so now I wanted to do something different. This idea came up when I thought about my project and the 90s. Black and white, timeless, plain are the words that fits my theme. On these words I designed the front cover. It is clean, clear and timeless. This really reminds me of the 90s, but it also exudes luxury. The way I have presented it does not need pictures. It's interesting and appealing to my target audience because they don't know exactly what's coming, they just want to turn the page. Sometimes to show less, this can actually arouse curiosity. Often people already have expectations with a front cover and because I have kept it simple, they can often be pleasantly surprised. See image below.
The title is in font style Cinzel and in size 32. I have used a black background and used the lines of the a square shape and used the colour black to create this page.
I have used a circle shape for the images and a corner of a square. The font style of the text is Quicksand in size 24. For XOXO I used font style great vibes in size 12. Because I used 2 different fonts, they match with the other pages. I've used elegant font styles on some pages and more basic ones on the others. so it's no longer disturbing that I used 2 different fonts.
The picture on the right is cropped. This wasn't my first intention but I accidentally pressed on the photo twice and then I was able to crop the photo. I was curious and I tried something out. When I saw this photo cropped I thought it looked very cool. This also fitted better in terms of appearance of the page so that I did not have 2 the same shapes. The coming soon was a shape from flipbook itself so I don't know which font style this is. I have used black square shapes and made it smaller and narrower. This way the images stands out more. Using only black and yellow makes it more clear to look at and not too busy.
I have used stripes to create a black and white effect. On the right the image is in the shape of a circle so it matches the shape of page 2. I like the picture at the top more so I decided to make it bigger than the other picture. I added a small detail with yellow so it matches the other pages. The page was looking really basic so I added the word classy because that was the first word that come to my mind when I saw this page. I used font style Itiliana and font size 167.
The last image which is my final outcome of the project with the dress and accessories. I made this picture really big because it is an important image. This is what the story is all about. I have used the same font style as the page before and the size is 80. I used a big square and added this behind my images so my photo stands out more and it matches with page 2. I also used yellow details so every page match together.
So now my flipbook is finished and I am happy with the end result, I pressed on publish. After this I pressed on embed to receive the code. I filled in the embed code on my website so people can see the flipbook. I have done this before so it was really easy this time. This is how it looks on the website. The only thing left to do is write my reflection post about this project.
I used a grey background for the flipbook so the pages are clear to see. I also write an introduction to introduce my project.
Reflection
WOW! I am really proud of myself. In the beginning I was really struggling of how I wanted to present it and how I wanted it to look like, because I normally use warm/soft colours but now i've outdone myself. I have used cheap accessories and fabrics but the way the images came out and how it is presented is has a luxurious appearance which I was aiming for. It's a completely different style from my previous project because I tried new things. I am very happy about this because it is important not to stay in your comfort zone all the time. using yellow makes my pages stand out but is also a good addition to my theme as neon was a trend in the 90s. All pages fit together and there is a nice cohesion
This editorial is classy, elegant, timeless, simple and powerful. My theme comes out very well without using words. I am proud to be able to tell a story just by taking pictures. This did not work for me on my previous project and therefore, I can see I am making progress.
