Research Marc Jacobs

Today I have researched Marc Jacobs and looked at his spring collection from 2014. I have chosen this collection because all the designs are in black. I looked at the fabrics and silhouettes from this collection.

Marc Jacobs (1963) born in New York, is an American fashion designer who is known for his "wild, bright and edgy designs" (Chelsea Jordan Fidm, n.d) He was greatly influenced by other designers such as Halston and Shiapaerelli. When he was 15 years old he enrolled in the High School of Art and Design. In this time he met fashion designer Perry Ellis, and became his mentor. In 1981 he enrolled at Parsons school of Design and for his graduation project he had to design a collection. This collection is been sold to Charivari and received many positive feedback.

Jacobs opened the first of his many boutiques and signed on as a creative director for Louis Vuitton in exchange for financial support. He is one of the main reasons why Louis Vuitton is such a successful high-end brand today. At Louis Vutton he designed the first collection of ready to wear and he expanded the accessories line. In 2013 he stepped down as creative director of Louis Vuitton in order to concentrate on his own line (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2021).

His succes came form several collaborations with artists such as Stephen Sprouse (2001), Takashi Murakami (2005), Richard Prince (2007) and Yayoi Kusama (2012). He also received industry accolades such as CFDA awards, a plague on the Fashion Walk of Fame in New York City's Garment District and the Fashion Group International's Superstar Award (The Business of Fashion, n.d).

Spring summer collection 2014 by Marc Jacobs for Louis Vutton.

This collection was the last one he designed because he left the French Luxury house to focus on his own line. The backdrop to the collection was a compilation of all of the most memorable sets of his past presentations.  Jacobs dedicated this collection to many women who moved or influenced him who had lived in Paris for fifteen years, including designers Coco Chanel, Rei Kawakubo and Miucci Prada et al. In this series, you can see excerpts of his works, in addition to callbacks to his own greatest hits. This collection contains fish net stocking, leggings with a peacock motif and sheer tulle bodysuits. (Vogue, 2013)

It was inspiring to see how he made multiple designs all in black yet so different. On the first picture,
I really like the halter top of this dress. I think the dress is a bit too long for my own design because the dress will then become too chic. The fabric he used makes the dress look more glamorous
On the second picture, I like how the dress has basic shapes but he added elements on the shoulder with different fabric which makes the dress looks more dramatic.
On the last picture, I like the fish net in the cut outs of the dress. The velvet fabric makes the dress more elegant and sexy. I like the shiny appearance so I am considering to use velvet or satin as fabric for my dress.
Because of this collection I started to think whether my design that I have for my dress is not too simple. Maybe I could add elements from other fabrics to make the dress look more daring. However, I am still a beginner to fashion design so I am not sure if I am capable enough to make designs such like these.

  1. I think you are right to question whether or not your designs are too simple - there is definitely room and time to add to what you already have - the dress design from the last post was very straightforward, therefore you have time to make what you are producing more elaborate taking Marc Jacobs research as a starting point and thinking about the other designers you have looked at this term and how you can incorporate other elements to your design to make it more unique.
