Research Julie de Libran

My aim for this project is that it harms the environment as little as possible, so I considered how I can make my dress more sustainable. Therefore I have researched Julie de Libran. I mainly focused on her own brand because I thought this would be a great fit related to my theme.

Julie de Libran (1972) is a French fashion designer. She has worked for various fashion houses such as Sonia Rykiel, Gianni Versace, Prada and Louis Vuitton. She specializes in women's fashion, celebrity and event dressing.

In march 2020 she had her own brand called Dress By Julie Libran.  When she was 14 years old she wanted a dress but she could not find one she liked. She took a sketch to a dressmaker and made her the dress she wanted. That is why she materialize a very specific vision with her own brand. (The love magazine, 2020)

She is known for her craftsmanship, sustainable and responsible production.
Every dress has its own name because every design is unique. Her collection is sustainable made from dead stock fabrics that were made for the finest pieces but never used..  The fabrics are from Europe, many of these fabrics would be otherwise destroyed (Libran, n.d). This is because she is a designer and a mom now and she wants to be responsible and wants to harm the environment as little as possible. Each dress is also made in limited quantities because of the fabrics she use. When it's sold out there is nothing left which eliminates wasteful overproduction. (The love magazine, 2020) She wants to create collectable treasures with meaning. Timeless and unique pieces is what she aim for. (Libran, n.d)

I find her vision behind her collection inspiring . "I want that woman to feel that she is wearing something that is light, comfortable, unique; something that doesn’t get in her way; that she can move in and feel free and strong"(Julie de Libran, 2019). It reminds me of the vision from Chanel, were woman were free from corsets and constricted clothes.

Perhaps I can collect old clothes from people or buy fabrics from secondhand shops to make my dress more sustainable.

These photos below are from spring 2020 collection. I looked at the silhouettes and fabrics.

I like the off-shoulder part of the dress. It's elegant, sexy and feminine.
I also like the bottom of the dress how it falls loose and subtle to one side
I do think the split is too high which would make my own design too sexy.  I really like the fabric but because it shines through,  it becomes more difficult to wear this dress for any occasion

I like the silhouette of this dress. Basic shapes, with short sleeves. This with would be perfect for a timeless design for multiple occasions.

I like the top of this design. because the top fits nicely and falls more and more loosely, it makes it feminine but also easy to move in.
I would also do the tapes in the same fabric and a whole instead of 2 parts. I would lengthen the top to just above the knee so it becomes a dress. I like this fabric better for my design, but I don't know if the look will look to festive.

  1. Good insights here into de Libran - you have gone into good depth here and drawn some interesting links to your own work. there is an opportunity for some PRIMARY research here - take a trip out to a fabric shop/second hand shop and document your experience with photographs and interviews with staff (if possible) finding out about the kinds of fabrics that are popular or even a shop that specialises in accessories, so you can get a better idea of what is popular and direct your research accordingly.
