Research editorials

I already have done some research in editorials but today I looked at the layout, colour, font size and style to gain inspiration of how I want to present my work. I found a website called Dribble, were you have many examples of magazine's and brochure lay outs. I already decided to use a front cover which will be a basic layout with my title 'Something old, something new, something black'. I will use 2 pages to present the photos. I want to use an introduction to explain the idea behing my theme and I want to use short introductions next to the photos where I present the accessories.

In this template she used the same colours as in her images which match really wel. They used several font sizes and styles but it isn't disturbing to see. They didn't used many texts so the pictures stands out.  I do like the soft warm brown colours in the image because it gives a calm appearance, however I already used these colours in my other editorials so it will be in the same style and now I want to try something new and different.

In this template they also did the same colours in the layout as in the images. I like how they used the same colour as part of the background for the images. They used a basic frontcover that matches the other pages. What I like about this template is how they showed different parts of the model as close up and one final image where you can see everything. This way to present the outfit is something I would consider for my own template.

What I like about this template is that they let the photos overlap, but you can still see the photo clearly. I like how they have white between the images so it is not too busy to look at. On the left they have a bigger picture so I would use my final image on this page and on the right the images where I present my accessories. What I would do differently because it match better with my project is to add short introductions next to the images of the accessories.

What I like about this template is that they mixed colour images with black and white. This idea came across my mind but I didn't thought it would look nice, but seeing this it has something different. However, I am not sure if this will do something good to my final image because you cannot see how the accessories will look in real life because it is in black and white. I think is this editorial it is mainly focused on the accessories and not the clothes in the final image. I do keep this in mind and try this style to see how it would look. The accessories are presented in smaller images and the final image is presented bigger which is a good addition.

I like the creme/white background and the font style of this template. It is clean, easy to read and not too basic. However, to me it looks a little bit boring. There isn't an introduction or much text included in these images so I would turn the page really quickly because it isn't interesting to see. I would add more texts and colours to make it more interesting to look at.

I chose this template because I do not like how the images are presented on the bottom left side. First they are presented basic next to each other and secondly, the image in the middle is not really well presented because it is on 2 pages. Therefore you can not see the image really well and it is disturbing to look at.

Using the colour red makes the pages more outstanding. I am probably going to use red lipstick so this will be a great colour to add to my pages. What I also like is that they used images to fill the pages of random objects or environment. Maybe I can shoot close-ups from the location and add these to my pages to create an historical environment so people will think about the past.

I also research what colour palettes were popular in the 90s, so I can use these colours in my template to reinforce my theme.  Vibrant and bold colours were really popular but after two decades the colours black, deep red,  forest green, dark brown and dark plum came into style. (Onyx creative, 2020)  I will consider these colours as my colour palette for the layout.  Depending of how the final images will look, I will choose the colours that will match.

I also looked at the popular font styles so I can use these in my templates. These two font style below I like most because it is clean, easy to read and it is not too simple. When choosing my font style I will look at styles that look similar to these.

This research was helpful because I discovered which colours, font styles and sizes I want to use for my own layout. I saw how it looked when images are presented in a specific way.  The colour palette of the 90s and font style is a nice addition to my pages to reinforce my theme. I also saw of how I don't want to present my images. After this research I want to have a front cover and introduction on two separate pages.  I want to have 1 page for the final image and 1 page for the accessories images. The images of accessories will be presented in different shapes or sizes and maybe they overlap, I'm not sure yet, but I'm going to try this to see what it looks like.  I will use different sizes of the fonts and images. I will also add colour and maybe environment photos to make it more interesting.  When making my flipbook I will come back to this post to gain inspiration.

  1. In an editorial layout it is important that the text reflects well on the images in terms of both style and colour, so you were right to identify this.
Interesting also that you identified how easy to turn a page if the layout doesn't immediately catch your eye - this is a failing of many magazine layouts (of many different kinds of publications) therefore look at putting together at least 2 or 3 different layout versions before you settle on your final outcomes.
