Glossary of terms

In yesterday's lesson, we had to research terms that are related to our progression route. Every term is explained in my own words.  Over the weeks I will add new words that I did not know yet.

See below my list based on fashion, communication, and styling. 


Limited edition
Clothing which is only produced in very small numbers, so that each one will be valuable and making the clothing more unique.

Editorial
An editorial is an article that is written by the editor of the newspaper, which voices an opinion on a topic


Cover
Magazine covers feature the headlines of the most important stories on the cover to attract their readers.

Stylist
They provide fashion advice. choosing and outfits for models in photo shoots or actors in television and film.

Event styling
The visual identity of an occasion

Advertising
Is a form of communication with the aim of persuading potential customers to purchase products and services.

Lay-out
The way in which text or pictures are set out on a page

Photoshoot
Is a term that describes the process followed by creatives and models that results in the achievement of a predetermined visual goal.

Apparel
Is just another word for what you wear

Accessories
Something added to clothing that has a decorative purpose.

Fabrics
A cloth made by weaving, knitting, or felting fibers.

Fashionista
This is someone who always knows the latest trends and is up to date within the fashion world.

Garment
Is an item or clothing.

Trends
It signifies a specific look or expression that is spread across a population at a specific time and place. You often see it pass by for a certain period of time but also disappear again.

Haute Couture
these are garments of which only 1 or only a few are made and are made from high-quality, expensive, often unusual fabric and sewn with attention to detail.

Stereo types
Is an exaggerated image of a group of people that often does not correspond to reality. It is often a prejudice or negative belief.

Look book
Is a collection of photos to show models, photographer, style, stylist or clothing line.

Natural Fibres
These  are fibers that are produced by plants, animals, and geological processes.

Silhouette

Describes the shape of a person's body or the shape created by wearing clothing of a particular style or period.

Editing 
Editing is a term that can mean anything from developmental editing to copyediting to deciding what gets published.

Fashion editor
They are generally responsible for overseeing the overall process of creating, planning, developing, managing and content for fashion-specific magazines, photo shoots, websites, newspaper sections or television shows.

Label
The term fashion label refers to upcoming designers who make ready-to-wear outfits in limited numbers. 

Hemline
The hemline refers to the lower edge of a garment.



Terms I didn't know:

Bespoke 
The term bespoke refers to clothing that is custom-made for a particular person at that person's request.

In vogue
When something is said to be in vogue, it is means it is currently in trend or in style.

Appliqué
Cutting shapes from textile fabrics and attaching them to another fabric or garment in order to decorate the base material.

Corporate 
Corporate apparel is designed to be worn in traditional business environments.

Batik
A hand technique for decorating textiles in which parts of the fabric are covered with wax.

Bias
Bias is the diagonal direction of a woven fabric.

Frog
A decorative closure for a garment that is made from cord or braid.

Havelock
Cap, usually with a visor, that has a piece of fabric that extends from the back edge of the cap to the base of the neck.

Lyocell fiber
Regenerated fiber made from cellulose materials.

Oxford
A basic shoe style that either laces shut or is closed with some other fastening.

Tuck
A means of manipulating fullness in garments by folding the fabric and sewing a row of stitching parallel to the fold.
