Process - ice breaker

The making of my self portrait in 3D

First I start to make the background made out of cardboard. Length is 35 cm and width is 30 cm.

After this I painted the cardboard black.

I cut the shape of the photo into an oval.
I used the thickness of the cardboard for the right dimensions for the picture.

After this I cut the strips and put them in the right order.

After this I made rectangles of cardboard in the length of 17 cm and height 6 cm.

After I made the rectangles I could see this would not fit into my background. I made a bigger background and change the length into 56 cm instead of 35 cm.

First I wanted to paint the cardboard rectangles in the color that matched the photo, but when I was making it, I was afraid the photo wouldn't stand out anymore, and I painted it black too.

After this I measured the center of my background so that everything is even

I decided to use different heights because this would be nicer. I also calculated this and worked with 0.25 cm per strip so that there was an arc.  The spaces between the lines is 1.5 cm

Pasted the dashes of the photo onto the cardboard.

Final result:

I made this video a few days later and now the stripes of the photo have come off the cardboard. I tried to paste this again but unfortunately this didn't work.

Reflection:

I am satisfied with the end result. I am glad that I started working with heights afterwards, because the end result is now much cooler. Because I had a plan and prepared myself well, the process went much faster. I measured everything carefully and thought about the sizes. Because of this project I worked very precisely and it took a lot of patience. Previously I did not take this into account much with other projects, because I often have no patience. Because I have now done this, the end result is nicer.
Unfortunately some of the stripes in the photo are cut too small, so that you can see some cardboard in the background.
I also left 1.5 cm space between each line,
but this has not been successful everywhere, so the overflow is not perfect and you see holes.
I really liked the picture, but for this project I could have used a different photo because the hat looks weird, like I'm a wizard..

  1. You are right that it is not perfect - but don't be too hard on yourself and acknowledge the restrictions you are under at the moment in terms of materials etc. The finish could be a bit tighter, but this kind of approach if developed with thought and good planning (as you demonstrated here) could be something you try again for the 3D element of this terms project. Looking forward to hearing you talk about this in the session this week.
