Ice breaker: Self portrait

For our lesson today we had to make a self portrait in 15 minutes. For the lines I have used H pencil and for the shadows I have used 5B pencil. When I look at my portrait I see that I am smiling but you can not find much more behind it and that makes my portrait more mysterious. The gaze in my face is a little bit scary because I have drawn my look differently than I look in reality.

One of the artists we discussed today in class is David Hockney. The ways he used to make a self portrait was really interesting for me, because it is not a realistic self portrait. Only the eyes are drawn as normal but how he has used the colors and shapes of the rest of the face is not what you often see. Still, you can tell it is a face.
What I have noticed doing research in this artist is that he uses many bright colours and therefore it makes me happy to look at his paintings.

David Hockney (1937) born in Bradford is know as one of the most important painters of this century. One of his paintings  is sold for some 90 million, breaking the record for a living artist.  Came from Californian influences because David lived in London and California.

He separates him from other pop artists by painting scenes from his own life or from friends of their immediate surroundings in a way that transcends a particular category or movement. He is well known for his figurative paintings.

His inspiration comes from other artists such as Picasso, Dufy and Matisse. He tried to uses their techniques in his impressionistic photographs which later lead to paintings. He pulled ideas for art from everywhere such as poetry, fairy tales.
