Research on Pierre Bonnard

For digital arts we have to research Pierre Bonnard who is a French artist, painter, illustrator and printmaker. His inspiration comes from the work of Paul Gauguin and Japanese artists. Many of his paintings he focus on the background rather than the object. Many of his paintings are painted from memory's and notes.

He is also known for his bold use and use a variety of colors in his paintings. He was so obsessed with using colors that when he was satisfied with a color he mixed he would adjust other paintings with this color. Therefore he constantly changing his paintings and you could suggest he is never satisfied. That is why the artist Picasso thought he was not an artist because he never could choose.

Pierre Bonnard (1867), Nude in Bathtub

This painting is one out of the four he made from his partner. It feels he gives you a glimpse of his personal life. She lays in a bathtub but you can not see her face clearly.  It reflects calmness and peaceful through the attitude of Martha's body. He used different patters and different colors such as yellow, red and blue. This gives the room more depth. The bold colors and the patterns in this painting would be perfect for a fashion design. For an editorial I would do an underwater photoshoot and use effects in the colors of the painting like a beauty editorial.

  1. Your writing about the painting is good but your contextualising it with your work needs work! You can use any inspiartion for fashion and many fashion designers have used painting as their inspiration and applied it to their collections - you don't say 'this has nothing to do with fashion' you state how this work cn really inform work and what you can learn about colour palette, texture and combinations when looking at this - what have you learnt - what does this tell you
