Research fashion designers - Final project
For my final project I will do a photoshoot with an editorial inspired of the winter trends 2020. My first research will be in Karl Lagerfeld and Tom ford.
Karl Lagerfeld
(Chanel Ready to wear spring, Paris)
He entered the fashion industry after winning a design contest in 1954. In 1962, he became one of the first fashion designers to work freelance. One of his most notable achievements was bringing Chanel back from the dead and completely rebranding it in the 1980s.
The collection I have researched is the Studio KL by Karl Lagerfeld. This collection stands for his most iconic designs from the 90s and remakes them into a new generation. This collection features two black tuxedo jackets with asymmetric lapels, black cut out dresses, tailored black pants, cape jackets and the famous Karl Lagerfeld crisp white t-shirt. This collection is timeless and formal. This collection fits well for my own photoshoot because I want to use natural tones in a formal way.
Tom Ford
Fashion designer Tom Ford is best known for turning Gucci into a brand worth billions of dollars before leaving the business to launch his own highly successful brand. He did menswear and womenswear for Gucci, Yves saint Laurent and his own line. He also turned his hand to designing beauty eyewear and accessories, film production and directing, and fashion photography. He has a history of breaking fashion rules.
From being a Cathy Hardwick’s design assistant to becoming women’s ready-to-wear designer and creative director at Gucci, he has been living his dream of bringing about a change to the world of fashion. He changed the way the world perceived the brand and cemented his place in the fashion fraternity forever. Some of his patrons include the likes of Madonna, Trudie Styler and Bianca Jagger. An open homosexual, Ford gained international fame for his famous makeover of the Gucci fashion house and the introduction of the ‘Tom Ford’ fashion label. His collections Spring/Summer 2003 for Gucci and YSL, which was launched at the Paris Fashion Week, is one of his greatest collections. This fashion line focused largely on animal prints on t-shirts, pants, kaftans and gowns. The line became a true trend-setter as it was introduced during a time when animal prints were in vogue.
(Gucci spring 2003 Ready to wear, Paris fashion week)
In the collection of Tom ford autumn/winter 2020 for woman I see bright color suits tiger prints and crosshatching patterns. The fabrics he used where silk, suede, satin and leather. This collection is inspired from a 1960s French Vogue photo of a model holding a cigarette to another's mouth. The sweatshirts are in combination with skirts and jackets. The pants have wide cuts with silhouettes and turtlenecks come in vibrant shades of green, purple and blue. The denim with patchwork details and tie-dye prints. For his evening wear, dresses are made of sheer lace with sexy cut-out and bow details.

Good that you have started on the research now you need to get more in depth and really look at a specific collection from these designers and discuss the cuts/style of the clothes in depth - look a a fashion glossary and really use the right terminology and then use this to inform your own work
